Last year, Jim Mickle’s story of a family of cannibals swept
the festival circuit and horror world alike. Unbeknownst to most, his was but a
reinterpretation of Jorge Michel Grau’s Somos lo que hay. Translated to We
Are What We Are, the film is the story of a group of kids who are
forced to pick up where their father left off when he unexpectedly dies and
leaves them with the responsibility of providing for the family.
Knowing little about the film pre-viewing, I was excited to
see it on OnDemand the other night. While both the original and remake have
been on my radar for some time now, I was excited to get a chance to dig my
toes into the source material before seeing Mickle’s vision of the story.
I've been posting about this one for sometime, I am VERY excited about it's release so this news was extra sweet this morning! Jim Mickle's acclaimed new "masterpiece", We Are What We Are, is being released on DVD and Blu-Ray freash after the new year on January 7th. A new addition to the family of cannibal horror, this film has been getting rave review after rave review and is widely considered by many to be the best horror film of the year.
A seemingly wholesome and
benevolent family, the Parkers, have always kept to themselves, and for
good reason. Behind closed doors, patriarch Frank rules his family with a
rigorous ferver, determined to keep his ancestral customs intact at any
cost. As a torrential rainstorm moves into the area, tragedy strikes
and his daughters Iris and Rose are
forced to assume responsibilities that extend beyond those of a typical
family.
As the unrelenting downpour continues to flood their small
town, the local authorities begin to uncover clues that bring them
closer to the secret that the Parkers have held closely for so many
years.
Michael Parks (Kill Bill, Twin Peaks), Kelly McGillis (Top Gun, Witness, The Innkeepers) and Kassie DePaiva (One Life to Live) all star in this riveting and terrifying remake of the Mexican thriller by the same name.
The special features on the DVD/Blu-Ray will include:
- “An Acquired Taste: The Making of We Are What We Are’”
- Interviews with director Jim Mickle, cast members Bill Sage and Julia Garner
- Audio commentary with cast and crew
This year has been a SOLID year for horror movies, what with the release of Evil Dead (remake), Maniac (remake), You're Next, American Mary, and it's not stopping anytime soon. Slated for a September 27th release, Jim Mickle's remake of the Mexican cannibal click, We Are What We Are has just premiered the official trailer and my does it look... tasty.
"The Parkers have never been much for company. In fact, for as long as
they've lived in the Catskills, none of their neighbors have set foot in
their home. And that's by design; family patriarch Frank (Bill Sage) is
intent on maintaining his ancestral customs, which wouldn't be
understood by modern
society. Meanwhile, when
the storm clouds open up and their small town starts to flood, the
local authorities make some disturbing discoveries that seem to confirm
everyone's worst suspicions about the mysterious clan."
Memento Films International has approved a prequel AND sequel to Jim Mickle’s We Are What We Are. An
adaptation of a 2010 Mexican film of the same name, the film hasn’t
even been nationally released yet however it was released at Sundance
this past January, and will be making it’s international debut at The
Directors Fornight next week. According to Mr. Disgusting at Bloody Disgusting, AJ Annila (Sauna, Jade Warrior) will be taking the directors helm for the prequel, adequately titled What We Were. It will examine how mama met papa and how the Parker’s bizarre rituals were set into place. Last week I put it on the must watch list, and I’m sticking by it.
The trailer looks solid, and while I can’t say I’m excited about this
news (as I haven’t even had the oppurtunity to see the film yet) I don’t
mind it either. It’s getting damn good reviews thus far.
Now THIS is the kind of movie that really gets my engine running. In
the modern horror world of jump scares, ghost stories and demonic
houses, We Are What We Are,an adaptation of the 2010 Mexican film of the same name, debuted at Sundance to favorable reviews (7.2/10 on IMDB). Starring Julia Garner and Ambyr Childers, it tells the story of the
seemingly wholesome Parker family who happen to have a secret penchant
for having guests for dinner. And by having guests for dinner, I don’t
mean throwing dinner parties. Needless to say, I couldn’t be happier. Yesterday a sneak peek was released of the film and oh boy did it get my blood pumping, take a peek here and, please, do share. What do you think?
